Getting Started with Microsoft Power Platform: A Developer’s Perspective

Introduction

As a developer at Toolfe, I’ve been diving into the Microsoft Power Platform to streamline business processes, automate tasks, and build data-driven apps. Whether you’re a pro dev or a business user, Power Platform offers a low-code way to solve real-world problems fast.

In this post, I’ll walk you through what Power Platform is, its key components, and how I’ve been using it to create impactful solutions.

What is Power Platform?

Microsoft Power Platform is a suite of tools that empowers everyone from citizen developers to IT pros to build apps, automate workflows, and analyze data.

Key Components:

  • Power Apps – Build custom apps with low-code or no-code.
  • Power Automate – Automate workflows between apps and services.
  • Power BI – Turn raw data into interactive dashboards and visual reports.
  • Power Pages – Create secure, low-code websites for external users.
  • Dataverse – Central data platform for secure data storage and modeling.

Why I Use Power Platform as a Developer

While it’s known as a low-code platform, Power Platform is developer-friendly:

  • Connect to external APIs using custom connectors
  • Extend apps with Power Fx or JavaScript for advanced logic
  • Build components using Power Platform CLI and PCF (Power Component Framework)
  • Integrate with Azure Functions, SQL Server, and SharePoint

Real Use Case at Toolfe

One of the first solutions I built:

📌 Quality Inspection App (Power Apps + SharePoint + Power Automate)
– Canvas App with multi-step inspection forms
– Data stored in SharePoint Lists
– Automated notification via Power Automate
– Reported using Power BI dashboards
This replaced our paper-based process and improved tracking, audit readiness, and productivity.

Developer Tips

  • Use Power Automate Desktop for RPA to automate legacy systems
  • Store logic in child flows for reusability
  • Use environment variables and solutions for proper ALM
  • Use custom connectors to call external REST APIs from flows and apps

Resources I Recommend

  • YouTube Channels: Reza Dorrani, April Dunnam, Shane Young

Final Thoughts

Power Platform has empowered me to deliver real business value in days instead of weeks. Whether you’re new or experienced, I encourage you to explore it. it’s transforming how we build and deliver solutions.
